Global: An Amazing Passport to Discovery

It’s a big world, and what is a better way to experience it than on a global scale?

As a Girl Scout, she’ll find her place in the world and make a real difference, whether she travels the globe or decides to participate in local activities with worldwide impact.

Global Girl Scout activities help boost a girl's awareness of the world through cross-cultural learning opportunities—and help her better understand important global issues, giving her the power, inspiration, and resources to make the world a better place. Girl Scout founder, Juliette Gordon Low, once famously said, “Girl Scouting and Girl Guiding can be the magic thread which links the youth of the world together.”

Global Action Award

In 2015, leaders worldwide agreed to work together to accomplish 17 goals by 2030—these are referred to as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or Global Goals for short. They focus on things like taking care of the environment, making sure all people have enough to eat, and improving people’s health. They’re big goals, but Girl Scouts know a thing or two about changing the world!

The Girl Scout Global Action Award calls for girls to address the Global Goals by discovering, connecting, and taking action in their communities and the world. The Global Action award is an official national award, so Girl Scouts can wear it on their vest or sash, just like a badge.

Global Action Days

Girls earn the Global Action Days patch by celebrating three of the Global Action Days during the year, completing at least one activity from the toolkit for each day.

Patches are free while supplies last!

International Friendship Pin

The International Friendship Pin (IFP) is earned by Girl Scouts living overseas and registered with a USA Girl Scouts Overseas Committee. Its purpose is to encourage USA Girl Scouts Overseas to take advantage of their unique opportunities for international friendship while they are living outside of the United States.

The IFP can be earned as an IRM, with a troop, or even as an entire overseas community. There are seven requirements, listed below, all designed to help girls explore their host nation community:

  1. Make new friends with persons of your host country
  2. Learn about your host country and people through its customs and culture
  3. Learn about your host country and its people through its language
  4. Learn about your host country through its history and geography
  5. Help people of your host country understand your nationality and home country
  6. Learn about the Girl Scout/Girl Guide movement in your host country
  7. Put into action a Girl Scout's duty to make the world a better place and find some way to help the people of your host nation
Lady Baden-Powell Award

In 1959, Lady Baden-Powell visited Panama and created a Lady Baden-Powell Award to be earned by three groups: Las Muchachas Guias (Girl Guides of Panama), the International Girl Scouts of Panama, and the Canal Zone Girl Scouts of the USA. Lady Baden-Powell conceived the idea for an International Friendship Award based upon the 5 "C's" - Communication, Community, Camping, Crafts, and Culture.

The award still bears her name today and is called the Lady Baden-Powell Award.

World Thinking Day

Take the lead on February 22 to celebrate World Thinking Day with Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from 150 countries! (That’s one big celebration!)

Promoted by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS for short) along with Girl Scouts of the USA, World Thinking Day originated in 1926. That’s when delegates from around the globe met at Camp Edith Macy—now called Edith Macy Conference Center—in New York State and agreed that February 22 would henceforth be known as a special day for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts worldwide. For more information, visit WAGGGS' Challenge Badge 2020 page and learn more about the Living Threads program.

Every year since, World Thinking Day has called for Girl Scouts and Girl Guides to join together to take part in activities that promote changing the world for the better and celebrate being part of the global sisterhood that is Girl Scouts and Girl Guides!
