About this event
Join USA Girl Scouts Overseas and Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan for a very special Juneteenth celebration, hosted by Telva McGruder, Board Chair of the Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan and Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer at General Motors (GM).
Also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day – Juneteenth is a holiday celebrating the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. Originating in Galveston, Texas, it is now celebrated annually on the 19th of June throughout the United States, with varying official recognition. It is commemorated on the anniversary date of the June 19, 1865 announcement by Union Army general Gordon Granger, proclaiming freedom from slavery in Texas.
Before joining GM, Telva worked at NASA. That's right! THE National Aeronautics and Space Administration!! She had this to say about the environment and her colleagues at NASA: “Most of them were, you know, not Black. They were White. They were older men. It was typical NASA,” McGruder said.
McGruder said she knew she had the skills, intellect and talent to succeed. “When I say I wasn’t intimidated, what I mean is I had enough confidence behind me to -- to be confident that I’d be able to move through those moments,” McGruder said.
Telva has spent her life encouraging other women to be themselves and reach new heights, as she has often been one of the only women in a space where decisions are made. “The thing that has made me so successful is not accommodating how someone else wants me to think, not accommodating how someone else wants me to behave when it comes to how I demonstrate my technical ability,” McGruder said.
